Houston Buddhist Vihara located in Houston, Texas (USA) was founded in June 1988.  Houston Buddhist Vihara Inc., a religious coroporation organized under the Religious Corporation Law in the USA, maintains and promotes it for Buddhist purposes.  US Federal Government and State of Texas has approved it as a non-profit religious organization. Houston Buddhist Vihara carries on the Theravada Buddhist tradition founded in Sri Lanka, Thailand, Burma, Laos and Cambodia.

Vihara - is a Sinhala equivalent of a buddhist temple.  In a Sri Lankan Vihara, you can find three shrines for the buddha, bhikkus residence quarters, a hall for offering alms and a hall to hold dhamma talks and discussions.  The three shrines for the Buddha are : A monument containing the Buddha's relics  (called dagoba or chetiya), a Bo-tree from the tree where buddha attained enlightenment, and a shrine room containing statues representing the Buddha and his biography.
